Dynamic Creative Optimization (DCO)

Dynamic Creative Optimization, commonly known as DCO, is a technology that automatically assembles and serves the most relevant version of an ad for each impression. Rather than producing a single creative and running it uniformly, DCO allows advertisers to define a set of interchangeable elements (headlines, images, offers, calls to action) and let the system combine them based on available signals.

How DCO Works

A DCO system typically works in three layers:

  1. Creative template: A designer or developer builds a modular ad template with defined variable zones: headline slot, product image slot, background, CTA button, legal text, etc.
  2. Asset library: Each variable zone is populated with multiple options. A headline slot might have five variants. A product image slot might contain 20 images drawn from a product feed.
  3. Decision engine: At the moment of serving, the system selects from the asset library based on available data signals and assembles the final creative in real time.

The decision engine can use a range of inputs: the user’s geographic location, the time of day, the device type, the publisher’s content category, audience segment membership, weather conditions, or the user’s position in a purchase funnel.

Types of DCO

Rule-Based DCO

The simplest form of DCO follows explicit rules set by the advertiser: “If the user is in Lyon and it is raining, show the waterproof jacket with the headline ‘Stay dry today’.” Rules are deterministic and transparent, which makes them easy to audit and to align with brand guidelines.

Algorithmic or ML-Driven DCO

More advanced DCO systems use machine learning to discover which combinations of elements perform best across different audience and context segments. Rather than the advertiser specifying rules, the algorithm tests combinations, observes performance signals (clicks, conversions, viewability), and over time allocates more delivery to the best-performing variants. This approach can uncover non-obvious combinations that a human planner would not have predicted.

What DCO Is Well Suited For

DCO delivers particular value in several scenarios:

  • Large product catalogs: Retailers with thousands of SKUs cannot produce individual creatives for each product. DCO can pull product images, names, prices, and availability from a live feed and insert them into a template automatically.
  • Geo-personalized messaging: National advertisers with regional store networks can serve ads referencing the nearest location, local pricing, or region-specific promotions.
  • Sequential storytelling: DCO can be configured to show different creative messages to the same user depending on how many times they have seen the campaign or which stage of the funnel they are in.
  • Seasonal and time-sensitive campaigns: Ads can automatically update to reflect countdowns, stock levels, limited-time offers, or time-of-day relevance without manual trafficking.

What DCO Is Not

DCO is sometimes conflated with broader personalization or with A/B testing. Some clarifications:

  • DCO is not the same as A/B testing. A/B testing compares two fixed creatives to determine a winner. DCO dynamically assembles creatives for each impression and can operate across many dimensions simultaneously.
  • DCO does not replace creative strategy. The quality of the template and the assets still determines the ceiling of performance. DCO optimizes within the space of what has been built.
  • DCO is not inherently creepy. Used with contextual or cohort-based inputs rather than detailed individual profiles, DCO can deliver relevance without relying on invasive data.

Measurement Considerations

Measuring the incremental impact of DCO requires care. Because the system is optimizing delivery toward better-performing combinations, standard click-through or conversion rates reflect both the optimization effect and underlying media quality. Isolating the creative contribution typically involves holdout tests comparing DCO-optimized delivery against a static creative baseline.

Reporting should track performance not just at the campaign level but by creative dimension (which headlines, which images, which CTAs are driving results) to feed back into future creative development.

How Arago Helps

Arago supports dynamic creative capabilities that let local retailers serve relevant, personalized ads without requiring a large creative production team. From product feed integration to geo-aware messaging, DCO within Arago is built to reflect the practical needs of retail advertisers operating across multiple locations and formats.
