Programmatic DOOH (Digital Out-of-Home)

Digital out-of-home advertising has existed for years, but the ability to buy it programmatically, in real time, with audience data and flexible creative, is a more recent development that is reshaping how brands reach people in the physical world.

What is DOOH?

Digital out-of-home (DOOH) refers to any digitally displayed advertising that appears outside the home: billboards, transit screens, digital signage in retail environments, airport displays, street furniture, stadium screens, and more. Unlike traditional static OOH, digital screens can rotate multiple creatives, update content in real time, and, when connected to programmatic infrastructure, be bought and sold dynamically.

What makes it “programmatic”?

Programmatic DOOH (pDOOH) connects digital screen operators (the supply side) to advertising buyers (the demand side) through the same kind of automated, data-driven infrastructure used for digital display and video. This typically involves:

  • Screen operators making inventory available via SSPs or specialist DOOH supply platforms
  • DSPs connecting to that supply and enabling buyers to target, bid, and measure programmatically
  • Audience data, from mobile signals, footfall measurement, or contextual sources, informing targeting decisions

The key distinction from traditional OOH buying is flexibility. Rather than committing to a fixed schedule weeks in advance, programmatic buyers can activate and adjust campaigns based on real-time signals.

How pDOOH auctions work

pDOOH auctions differ from standard digital RTB in a few important ways. Because a single DOOH screen shows ads to many people at once (rather than one impression per user), inventory is typically sold on a cost-per-thousand impressions (CPM) basis estimated from footfall data, rather than per individual ad serving event.

Auction dynamics can vary:

  • Some inventory is available in open auction via DSP connections
  • Much premium DOOH inventory is transacted through private marketplaces (PMPs) or programmatic guaranteed deals
  • Screen operators often maintain direct relationships with buyers for high-value placements

Targeting capabilities

pDOOH unlocks targeting approaches that were not practical in traditional OOH:

  • Location targeting: selecting screens near specific stores, venues, or neighborhoods
  • Audience-based targeting: activating screens in environments where target demographics are present, based on aggregated footfall or panel data
  • Contextual and temporal targeting: running ads at specific times of day, days of the week, or in response to real-world triggers (weather, sporting events, etc.)
  • Proximity to point of sale: prioritizing screens in retail corridors or near competitor locations

Data used for DOOH targeting is typically aggregated and does not identify individuals, which aligns with privacy regulations in most markets.

Creative considerations

DOOH creative differs from standard digital formats. Ads are typically viewed in passing, so messages need to be immediate and legible at a glance. Key considerations include:

  • Short, high-contrast copy readable from a distance
  • No audio dependency (most screens are silent)
  • Aspect ratios that vary by screen type (landscape billboards, portrait transit screens, square lobby displays)
  • Dynamic creative that can adapt to time, weather, or location context

Dynamic creative optimization (DCO) tools can automate these variations, serving the most relevant version of a creative based on real-time signals.

Measurement

Measuring pDOOH is different from measuring click-based digital channels. Common approaches include:

  • Footfall studies comparing store visits between exposed and unexposed audiences
  • Brand lift studies measuring awareness or intent
  • Mobile retargeting: identifying devices that were in proximity to a screen and measuring their subsequent behavior online
  • Sales correlation analysis for retail advertisers

How Arago helps

Arago gives local retailers programmatic access to DOOH inventory near their stores, enabling them to combine physical-world presence with the targeting precision and flexibility of digital, all from a single self-serve platform designed for local advertising.
